We think we might have identified the location of the Farnhill Wood rubbish tip.
You will recall that the original plan, which we thought must have fallen through, was for a joint arrangement to be shared with Cononley. Also mentioned was the need for a gate at the entrance.
From the minutes of the Farnhill Parish Council meeting held on August 30th 1912 it is clear that the gate is to be at the Eastern end of the site. This is interesting as Farnhill Wood is oriented roughly North-South, so where would you put a gate on the Eastern side ?
These days the Eastern edge of the wood is bounded by Bradley Lane, which is hardly easily accessible from Cononley. However, looking at a map of the time, an altogether different location is suggested.
The map above, published in 1910, shows that at that time Farnhill Wood straddled the Skipton-Keighley road, with a section known as "Low Wood" on the Cononley side of the road. Also marked is a lane leading off the main road into the Eastern side of the wood.
So our suggestion is that the Farnhill Wood tip may have been located in the Low Wood area - convenient for both Farnhill and Cononley - and that the gate mentioned in the FPC minutes was on the lane leading into the wood from the main Skipton-Keighley road.
